What Could Be Causing the Flashes and Floaters in My Eyes?

Have you recently noticed small spots drifting across your vision or sudden flashes of light out of the corner of your eye? These experiences, known as floaters and flashes, are surprisingly common and often harmless, but they can sometimes signal more serious issues. Understanding what causes these visual disturbances can help you protect your vision and know when to seek professional care.

What Are Flashes and Floaters?

Floaters are tiny spots, threads, or cobweb-like shapes that seem to float through your field of vision. You might notice them more clearly when looking at a plain background, like a blue sky or a white wall. Floaters are typically shadows cast on your retina by small clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous, the clear gel-like substance filling the inside of your eye.

Flashes, on the other hand, are brief bursts of light that can look like lightning streaks or camera flashes. They’re often noticed in the corner of your vision, and can be more pronounced in dark environments.

Common Causes

Most floaters and occasional flashes are a normal part of the aging process. As we get older, the vitreous gel in the eye gradually shrinks and can pull away from the retina, forming floaters. This natural process is called posterior vitreous detachment and is generally harmless.

When to See Your Doctor

While most floaters and flashes are harmless, there are times when they can indicate a serious problem, such as a retinal tear or retinal detachment. These conditions require immediate medical attention to prevent permanent vision loss.

Contact your eye doctor right away if you experience:

• A sudden increase in floaters, especially if accompanied by flashes

• A dark curtain or shadow appearing in your peripheral vision

• Loss of side vision or central vision

• Any sudden, severe decrease in vision

These symptoms may signal a retinal tear or detachment, which is a medical emergency.

Concerned About Flashes or Floaters?

Flashes and floaters are common and usually harmless, especially as we age. However, a sudden change in their appearance can be a warning sign of a more serious eye condition.
